Its projects help students learn about science in an accessible way and collaborate with professors and experts on topics that interest them. By connecting high school students with professors from the University of Zagreb, ZEPS gives them the chance to experience real research, lab work, and scientific communication. Students can develop their own projects or join existing ones under individual mentorship, often presenting their results at a final science fair. The program helps them gain research experience and explore potential future careers in science. The non-profit was funded by two fellow IB students as a way to provide others with experiences that can help them in their future.

ZEPS currently offers two major projects in the city of Zagreb. One of them “Where will you go? To university” is a year-long programme where students have the opportunity to experience working in scientific fields through first-hand experience. ZEPS is as of this moment collaborating with 7 universities and the Ruđer Bošković Institute where students can gain experience. Professors and scientists working in these institutions are able to suggest projects which interested students can join in order to either help the professor in already existing research or to conduct their own research to learn more about the field in which they are interested in with the aid of professionals. These projects range from computing and coding to investigating the types of food by researching feeding habits in live chickens. The projects usually last between 2 weeks to, sometimes, even a month. Interested students can apply to any project on the ZEPS website by completing a questionnaire with their wishes and writing a motivation letter that introduces them to the professor and explains why they want to participate in the project. Then the professor and the student come into communication and organise future meetings and the timeline of the project. Alongside this, ZEPS is planning to organize two events this year where students will present their projects to each other and will have the chance to communicate and socialize with other people their age.

Another project that ZEPS will be organizing this year is SIZI (“Fair of Innovations and Scientific Research”). This science fair will be taking place in April, and the exact date will be posted on the organization’s website. In the science fair students that conducted some scientific research as a part of the organization’s projects or independently can show their research and compete with each other for 1st place. This project’s aim is to motivate students to conduct research and share their findings with fellow students to create a productive and functional community where cooperation and initiative are being fostered.

Overall, the projects that ZEPS offers are a new interesting way for students to experience working in scientific fields. They give insight on scientific collaboration and communication which are essential skills for scientists. If you are interested in participating in either of the two projects, you can apply through the organization’s website.

ZEPS (“Scientific Educational Programs for High School Students”) is a non-profit organization that promotes science and supports young people’s scientific education.
